Growing your own tomatoes
- by Nick Castle
First of all, a tomato does not grow by itself; a support is needed. You can do this with strings attached to a higher hanging frame.
More convenient is often a tomato spiral. The plant winds around the spiral and with plant rings you attach the plant to the spiral.
The tomato spiral is usable every year.
Plant nutrition:
Plants, secondly, need nutrition and water just like we do. Without nutrition, they remain squeaky little plants.
Look for a special tomato plant fertilizer, it contains a lot of potassium for sturdy tomato plants.
Finally, you need to “thieve” the plant.
Thinning tomato plants is very important for good growth and lots of tomatoes.
Look at the pictures below. You will find the thief between the leaf axils and it should be removed.
Do not wait too long with this. The stem will grow larger and is almost impossible to recognize as a thief. Your plant will get a bad shape and this has a negative effect on the number of tomatoes.
